The National Potato Council is committed to extending the effective useful life of pesticides by promoting use patterns that reduce the opportunity for target pests to develop resistance. The use of scouting, careful planning, cutting edge application equipment and the rotation of classes of chemistry reduces the total use of pesticides and maintains product effectiveness eliminating the need for additional pesticide applications. Fewer pesticide applications means less risk to the environment and to workers while still producing a high quality, inexpensive potato. The NPC Pesticide Resistance Management Working Group developed resistance management brochures on fungicides, insecticides, and herbicides which are specific to pests and diseases impacting potatoes and provide practical advice in making product selections that reduce the development of resistance. Each brochure provides a concise description of the factors that can contribute to resistance development and a chart that helps rank products based on the potential of resistance development. The brochures were developed by the NPC through grower input and production costs were supported by a grant from Bayer CropScience.
