Certified seed potatoes are tubers which are grown specifically for reproduction in a controlled environment to ensure the reduction of disease introduction. Genetic purity and disease control are maintained through the use of laboratory testing, greenhouse techniques and limited generation production. Once potato mini-tubers or plantlets are planted in the field, they are entered into one of the 16 seed potato certification programs across the U.S. Entry into a certification program means the field or lot of potatoes undergoes numerous inspections for bacterial, viral, and fungal diseases, as well as varietal mixture, and adheres to strict tolerances established by state and federal regulations.

As a way to maintain vigor and reduce the buildup of disease, seed potatoes produced in the U.S. are limited in the number of years they can be recertified. Most seed lots are planted no more than five years from the mini-tubers or transplant stage before they are "flushed out" of the certification program. This helps ensure the vigor and health of seed potatoes produced in the U.S.
